Instructions For 4069 Children's Thumboform

  1. Verify the proper size by trying the support on the child.

  2. Place the thermoplastic insert (A) into the pocket of the brace (B).

  3. Pour hot water (170-180° F) into the pocket; a half cup is usually enough. Fill the pocket completely and wait about one minute, making sure the plastic has turned soft. Caution: Be careful when pouring the hot water into the pocket.

  4. Pour the water out of the pocket. Lay the support flat inside a folded towel and blot carefully to remove the moisture. Important: Do not place the support on the child when it's wet as it might lead to a burn injury. A stockinette should be worn during application to protect the skin. Keep in mind that children are more sensitive to heat than adults.

  5. Tighten the thumb strap and apply the support over the thumb.

  6. Stretch the thermoplastic piece slightly to prevent wrinkles on the inside. Next, tighten the wrist strap, pressing slightly over the thenar muscle to get a good fit, but don't press too hard or it might cause pressure marks in the plastic.

  7. The child should keep the support on while waiting for the plastic to set (usually 3-4 minutes.) A cold pack can be applied over the brace to speed up this process. If adjustments are necessary, let the support cool completely before pulling open the pocket. Start over from step #3.
